Much has happened since our last post! We’ve had so much going on in fact that it would be impossible to try to fit into a single post – so instead, I will catch you up on a sampling of some of the interesting goings-on here at Summit in 2016.
January brought the 100th Day of School and our primary students celebrated by counting.
They teamed up with High School students to count to 100 in a variety of fun (and tasty!) ways.
As part of a study on compassion, Mrs. Mathews 3rd grade class collected coins for Barktown Rescue, a local rescue for cats and dogs.
A couple of canine representatives and their human escorts visited the class to answer questions and get acquainted.
Ultimately they raised $162.00 (and some treats and toys) to donate to the rescue. Go 3rd grade!
This school year, our students have had the rare opportunity to participate in “classes” with the Walden Theatre Blue Apple Players.
As a result of funding provided by Kosair Charities and facilitated by Fund For The Arts, members of Walden Theatre Blue Apple Players have visited our school each week to provide arts programming to all of our students in small group settings.
These talented actors and teaching professionals guide our students through fun and engaging exercises aimed at educating them about theater arts, strengthening performing skills, and building confidence.
For many students, these activities have given them the perfect opportunity to “come out of their shell” and explore the world of acting in a way few others experience.
Last month, Mrs. Strong’s 4th grade class hosted their annual Explorer’s Wax Museum in the auditorium.
Students, staff, and parents were invited to tour the “museum” and learn about some of history’s most significant explorers.
It’s awesome to see how confident and proud the students are when reading their scripts!
The respect and encouragement displayed by several of the “visitors” goes to show the level of empathy that many of our students have for one another.
And, finally, we can’t leave out the Students vs. Staff/Parents basketball game!
As always, it was intense and action-packed.
And, as always, the students walked away with another win! GO EAGLES!
We look forward to seeing what other adventures 2016 has in store!
