Amy Broecker Kessler – Current Parent
Amy Kessler is the President of the Board of Trustees at Summit Academy. She is also Vice-President of Broadway Across America’s Midwest Region, which oversees the presentation of touring Broadway shows in Louisville. Amy has served on the boards of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, the Louisville Theatrical Association, Chance School; and currently serves on the University of Louisville STAR Autism program Board. Amy and her husband Herman have two children – Christopher, 17, and Caroline, 12, who is in the 7th grade at Summit.
Leslie K. Gagnon – Current Parent
Leslie Gagnon is the Vice President of the Board of Trustees at Summit Academy. Leslie has served as past Summit Academy PTO President and is entering her fifth year serving as Chairperson for the school’s Development Committee. Leslie lives with her partner, Dan Lanham, and her two children, Ellie who is a junior at St. Francis High School and John (7th grade) who has attended Summit Academy since Kindergarten.
Richard G. Whipple
A recently retired commercial banker, Rich Whipple is Treasurer of the Board of Trustees and has been a Board member for three years serving on the Finance Committee, which he chairs, and on the Development Committee. While he and his wife, Heather, have no children, they believe strongly in education and were drawn particularly to Summit Academy’s mission of educating children with learning differences.
David S. Strite – Alum Parent
David Strite is the Secretary of the Board of Trustees at Summit Academy and is also the immediate past-President of the Board. David is an attorney-at-law working with O’Bryan, Brown & Toner since December 1991. David and his wife, Lisa, have two children, Matthew and Meghan, with Matthew being a ’11 Summit Academy graduate.
Larry Pernosky is a Summit Academy Board of Trustees member-at-large. He is also currently the Vice President – Human Capital Consulting at Humana, Inc. working in close partnership with the executive team of the Chief Operating Officer. Larry is a graduate of Kent State University.
Janna Mathews has worked as a teacher at Summit Academy since 2006. Janna, a graduate from Indiana University Southeast (2009) and Bellarmine University (2012), has taught grades K-5, coached several after school clubs, and served as the faculty representative on the Board of Trustees.
Janna and her husband, Joshua, volunteer regularly at their church; where Janna has served as the head of the mission committee, youth hand bell director, and co-ed softball coordinator. Janna also serves as a volunteer and rescue foster for Barktown Rescue for dogs.
Margaret Thornton – Co-Founder and Head of School
Margaret Thornton has served as the Head of School for Summit Academy since its establishment in February 1992. She received her Bachelor’s of Science in Special Education from Murray State and her Masters of Education in Teaching the Neurologically Impaired from Indiana University. Margaret has been a practicing special educator since 1975, first as a classroom special education teacher and then as a school principal.
